Blue blindstamp decorated cloth cover with bright gilt sperm whale illustration on cover, bright gilt lettering on spine, black endpapers. 379 rough-cut pages including frontispiece, 7 illustrations, and a large fold-out map of the "mean track" of the Cachalot's voyage; drawing of whale at Chapter Head of first chapter. Signature of original owner inside front cover and on title page with date [1899]; very slight rubbing of cloth at extremities; very slight toning of foredges; hinges solid. The illustrations and map are in fine, clean condition. The book has been handsomely boxed, first placed in a five-part, hinged, protective sleeve, and then, thus covered, set in a fine half-leather slipcase with dark blue moroccan leather on blue cloth, the spine cover with five raised bands, the second panel thus formed with bright gilt lettered title and gilt rule borders and the fourth panel thus formed with gilt lettered author's name; the other four panels and five raised bands with bright gilt decoration; the date (1898) In bright gilt numbers centered within bright gilt borders at bottom of spine. A decorative bright gilt rule separates the leather from the cloth of the clipcase on all four sides. A near fine book placed In an elegant slipcase that reflects the deep appreciation of a previous owner for this volume. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall
